Quality improvement is a continuous process involving all levels of the organization working together across departmental lines to produce better services for health care clients. Professional nurses play a vital role in the quality improvement of health care workers. They involve other professionals and ancillary personnel in their efforts. Quality patient care services will be achieved as the result of positive interactions among departments working together to build dynamic mechanism that continuously improves the processes and outcomes of health care services.
One of the clinical examples of quality improvement in my area of practice is optimizing sepsis care by improving early recognition and outcomes. Identifying sepsis early can be challenging, as patients physical respond presents as a syndrome of non-specific symptoms, which delays recognition, diagnosis and treatment which increases mortality rate. This can be done by implementing a 12hour manual nurse sepsis screening surveillance tool. The tool will capture early sepsis recognition in already hospitalized patients and will prevent further complications like septic shock. Identify nurse champions to monitor screening compliance. Weekly team can be put in place to review identification and care of hospitalized patients who become septic.
