Why would someone in the health care field need this information?
Healthcare professionals need statutory law, administrative law, common law, etc. for many reasons:
Protect the health and safety of the public: They diagnose, treat, and care for patients.
Lets Healthcare professionals know what they can and cannot do: Healthcare laws set the
boundaries on positions.
Standardize care: Medical facilities should not set their own rules.
Consequences of not following healthcare laws for healthcare professionals could result in:
Loss of License
Fines
Prosecution
Harm of a Patient
Reputation
Even if a certain law doesnt apply to someones job in the healthcare field its essential to be aware with it. If
you see something happen that is not within the law, then an individual can report it and potentially save
themselves, their facility, and patients from liability and harm.
Think about a scenario that you may encounter and explain how this knowledge will assist you in
your career.
I work as a Healthcare Compliance Quality Assurance Supervisor for UPS Healthcare and Life Science. At UPS

make sure manufacturers are responsible for their products. UPS shows we follow regulatory requirements
through documentation, processes and training.

We use global compliance regulations in the US and across international borders. At UPS we have
relationships with 80+ regulatory agencies, and our facilities maintain local regulatory licenses in addition to
ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certifications.
In my career, knowing healthcare laws help ensure I follow the guidelines needed to protect patient safety
which can avoid a nonconformance (The act of going against the specified guidelines results in a nonconformance).

Module 1 Discussion
COLLAPSE
Health care law is more than just a subject required to earn your degree. Consider the laws discussed
in Chapter 2. The Chapter discussed statutory law, administrative law, common law, and more. It may
seem boring to someone who wants to work in health care. Why would someone in the health care
field need this information? Think about a scenario that you may encounter and explain how this
knowledge will assist you in your career.
People in the healthcare field require statutory law, common law and administrative law in all aspects of
health. These are considered binding rules that govern the responsibilities and the rights of the health
workers. All the rules make up a proper legal framework for people in the health sector. What is more, the
health laws are important to health workers because they formalize commitment to goals. For instance, when
faced with a problem related to universal health coverage, the laws make the universal health coverage better
and they create a better drive for action among various individuals. For example, with the laws, the health
services are made better and cheaper making it easy to access health services among individuals.
People use various health laws to create different organizations such as hospitals and they establish
better relationships. For example, the health care laws can be used in creating relationships such as
contracts that are used for providing health services. With the laws, the healthcare organizations will have
policies and mandates based on legal rules to guide their work.
