Changes in the form of education provided to nurses in nursing schools from content-based to competency-based have been enabled by the National Organisation of Nursing Practitioner Faculties (NONPF)’s published core competencies which are always in constant revision to be in line with the current needs of the nursing industry. Several healthcare fields, including advanced practice nursing, are shifting to competency-based curriculum designs to prepare them for future careers better. Moving from a content-based to a competency-based approach implies a shift in emphasis from teaching and transmitting faculty knowledge to focusing on the students and their learning achievements (Schumacher & Risco, 2017).

The nine core competencies published by the NONPF are as follows:

1. Scientific Foundations

Scientific foundation competencies are concerned with analyzing and applying data that can be used to examine, enhance, and improve healthcare services. It focuses on evidence-based care and employs both qualitative and quantitative research. Practices in health literacy, vulnerable groups, and cultural awareness are also covered(NurseJournal, 2022). I intend to participate in additional studies using evidence-based techniques to design competent but culturally acceptable ways to improve the quality and standard of care in the community I serve.

2. Leadership

Leadership is viewed as a process by which nurses can build visible leadership qualities and traits necessary to enhance patient results and staff and organizational productivity. This suggests that leadership competencies can be considered intentional and specified learning outcomes and that leadership and leadership competencies are not limited to a particular ideology (Heinen et al., 2019). I could carry out community health initiatives effectively with essential leadership skills such as effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

3. Quality

Quality is an essential aspect of nursing care delivery. The quality competency stresses research evaluation and how it might help improve health outcomes. Nursing practitioners must obtain, evaluate, and utilize current data while considering how cost, safety, and access to healthcare affect care quality (NurseJournal, 2022). Comprehension of the process of accessing and using information databases, as well as thoroughly analyzing research findings, are key quality competencies. I will be able to employ these abilities to boost the level of care available in the community by providing the essential skills and information.

4. Practice Inquiry

The significance of practice inquiry competency, one of the essential competencies of entry-level nurse practitioners, is relatively new (Chee, 2014). This competence guarantees that Nursing Practitioners comprehend academic resources and apply the research to practice. Nurses must employ critical thinking skills to assess how the current literary text might improve the efficacy of guidelines or adjust standards to enhance patient outcomes. I will provide care according to the latest guidelines and research as a nurse. I will be well equipped to provide the best care outcomes for patients using the latest standards and policies by ensuring I am always aware of recent studies by reading from peer-reviewed nursing.

5. Technology and Information Literacy

With new technologies constantly being developed, Nursing Practitioners must be able to keep up with current inventions and use these improvements to improve patient outcomes. They can practice more efficiently using new technology to access, manage, create, and evaluate health-related information. Nursing Practitioners who integrate nursing and communication technology can potentially improve the quality of their care (NurseJournal, 2022). This competence can be utilized in the community by using numerous technological strategies to engage the community, such as using various social media platforms to inform the population on healthy habits and lifestyles as preventive measures to enhance overall health outcomes.

6. Policy

Requirements of a nurse practitioner concerning this competency include; knowledge of current policies, advocating for policies that contribute towards better health outcomes for the population, analysis of the various factors that influence policy development, and analysis of the implications of health policies across multiple fields (NONPF, 2011). Per the policy competency, I will enlighten and educate residents of my community about their rights to healthcare and advocate the formulation of relevant health policies within the community.

7. Health Delivery System

This core competency teaches nurse practitioner candidates how to design, create, and administer local and general health care initiatives. Nurses are trained to formulate effective healthcare delivery strategies that fulfill the requirements of clients, caregivers, and other partners (LeCuyer et al., 2009). I can adopt effective healthcare delivery systems at the local level after evaluating to identify several gaps to provide optimal healthcare coverage.

8. Ethics

This competency requires a nursing practitioner to employ ethical principles in decision making, evaluate the moral consequences of various decisions, and apply ethically sound solutions to complicated problems involving individuals, populations, and care systems (NONPF, 2011). with ethical competence, I can face community health challenges and provide care within the guidelines while simultaneously providing great care through decision-making. This could include things like keeping patient information secret and discreet.

9. Independent Practice

This competency ensures that NPs have the professional and educational training required to practice as licensed independent practitioners. The competency assures that nurses can deliver all health services legally (NurseJournal, 2022). In line with this competency, I will be able to provide the best quality care to society when I decide to be an independent nursing care practitioner.

To impact social change in my community, I will make sure I collaborate with other professionals from different fields to contribute to formulating health policies that positively impact community health. Engaging with legislators on healthcare delivery matters will also contribute to the healthcare outcomes in society.
