Research has shown a number of disparities present in the health care of minority patients in relationship to white patients. Some studies have shown minorities are less likely than whites to receive appropriate cardiac medications for coronary artery disease, undergo bypass surgery, be referred for renal transplantation once on dialysis and receive pain medication for long bone fractures in the ER (IOM summary). we have discussed potential strategies to assist in enhancing cultural competence. Some examples include: Educational efforts for students, educational efforts for resident, legislation, research on the causes of disparities, patient education and empowerment, standardization of care and public health efforts. Select one of the examples and discuss how cultural competence could be enhanced.
