The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker
The term knowledge worker was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar? Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Druckers time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped

healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways. In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a presentation with an infographic to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.

Application of data to problem-solving
Nursing informatics is the integration of medical sciences, computer languages and
sciences to communicate data and knowledge to nurses or across to the healthcare team
accurately. The integration of informatics helps improve the efficiency of the nurses in providing
better care to the patients. Per McGonigle, D., & Mastrian, K. G. (2017), information and
information processing are essential to the services of healthcare. Because the healthcare
professional deals with and process information on an everyday basis to make it relevant and
inform his or her practice, he or she is known as a knowledge worker. (McGonigle, D., &
Mastrian, K. G., 2017).
A loophole scenario is where a patient has undergone a particular operation that is not in line
with the surgery they were to experiencea situation where a patient was amputated on the left
leg instead of the right leg. With the nursing informatics, this can be avoided as the nurses would
have precise information about the patient through electronic health records. Per McGonigle, D.,
& Mastrian, K. G. (2017), the electronic health record has promoted collaboration on a wideranging variety of healthcare information solutions.
Data collected could be proper identification of the patients, the site to be operated on,
and also vital signs such as blood pressure, respiration rate, SpO2sat pulse etc. This is the basics
information that nurses can obtain from the electronic healthcare records system. Further
information could include the side of the leg to be operated on and on what day the leg would be
operated on. The type of anesthesia that would be needed and the amount required is key to
ensuring the safety of the patient. This data collection is critical as it helps reduce medical errors.
The medical errors that can occur are the medication error where a patient with specific
symptoms can be given a wrong dose of medicine or even misdiagnosed. To prevent this
problem, the nurses are equipped with the informatics system, which helps them make quick,
accurate decisions that can save lives (McGonigle, D., & Mastrian, K. G., 2017).
The data helps nurses get enough knowledge necessary to deal with patients. In line with
this, nurses can get the name of the patients, the medical history, and what type of medication
they can get (Collins et al., 2017). Furthermore, nurses deal with many patients who require the
utmost care. In most cases, the nurses also assist the doctors with getting to know what type of
surgery an individual patient is to undergo (Ranquillo, Currie, Rodney, 2016).
A nurse leader will use reasoning by judging the situation if it is in line with the informatics that
they have gone through. Before a patient undergoes treatment, the nurse should assess the patient
to see if they have the same symptoms that were gathered from the informatics. A nurse leader
should use critical decision and not only believe in the informatics (Yen et al., 2017).
