Discussion: Ethics, Law, and the Good Samaritan
Darnell, a sophomore in college, is sitting in class when his instructor suddenly collapses mid-sentence. Silence fills the room and students appear frozen in their seats, except for Darnell. He rushes over to his instructor and begins to check for breathing and a heartbeat. Darnells assessment confirms that his instructor is not breathing and has no pulse, which indicates a possible heart attack. He immediately opens the mans airway and begins giving him breaths and compressions. The day before, Darnell finished taking his skills test for his Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. He is scheduled to take the written exam next week to be certified in CPR.Consider both law and ethics. Were Darnells actions ethical? Were they legal? Could Darnell be liable for performing CPR without having completed his training?Answers to these questions will be explored by examining Good Samaritan Laws, which is the focus of the Discussion this week.To prepare for this Discussion:Research the Good Samaritan Law for your state or province.Find another jurisdiction with a different Good Samaritan Law.Consider how the two Good Samaritan laws are different.
By Day 4 Post a comprehensive response to the following:
